Vitamin B2 or riboflavin as it is also known, belongs to the B vitamin complex, it is a water-soluble vitamin and yellow in color (in fact, it is a natural colorant that is used as a food additive) and, in addition, provides great health benefits of the human body and its proper functioning.

The lack of vitamin B2 can cause various health problems such as anemia, serious skin and eye problems.

Functions of Vitamin B2.

Vitamin B2 or riboflavin is involved in reactions to obtain energy from proteins, it also has an important role in cellular respiration processes and in the very important process of liver detoxification.

In addition, this vitamin is absolutely essential for proper growth, for the production of white blood cells and red blood cells, improves the condition of hair, nails and skin, favors the activity of other vitamins such as B6 and folic acid.

Modern research has shown that correct levels of vitamin B2 significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer and migraines.

Lack or excess of Vitamin B2.

The lack or excess of this vitamin can lead to serious health problems.

Lack.

Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin that does not accumulate in the body, it is necessary to provide it daily.

The deficiency of this nutrient produces symptoms such as ulcers on the lips and/or mouth, inflammation of the oral mucosa, burning and itching in the eyes, sore throat, skin changes and anemia.

All these symptoms disappear when our levels of this vitamin are optimal again.

Excess.

Vitamin B2 does not usually cause toxicity problems due to its excess, since normally it is eliminated through the urine and, in fact, its absorption in the intestine is limited and it is unlikely that we will absorb it in a high quantity.

The only cases in which this probability is presented to us is with the intake of supplements for long periods, the symptoms are sensitivity to light, a burning sensation and the urine has a more yellowish color than usual. These disappear when we stop taking this additional supplementation.

Sources of Vitamin B2.

Riboflavin-rich foods include dairy, meat, eggs, legumes, green leafy vegetables, almonds, walnuts, and brewer’s yeast.

Foods that contain vitamin B2 should not be exposed to light, since this can destroy it. It is estimated that exposure to light for 2 hours destroys 50% of this vitamin. They are also destroyed by high temperatures and excessive cooking.
